I got into an argument with ChatGPT

When I say I got into an argument with ChatGPT, I mean literally Reader.

Obviously, it wasn’t an all out shouting match as you can imagine, but it was an argument of sorts.

I've been experimenting with ChatGPT (and other AI writing tools) since last year, and a few months back, I was bored and got curious and wondered . . .

“How would ChatGPT respond to an unrealistic question?”

So I jumped on the computer and asked:

The conversation went on as I asked questions like "what if I really want it and manifest it in my mind's eye" and "what if I'm the best at what I do".

At one point, I was “upset” with ChatGPT because it was "being negative".

I fully embodied the toxic positivity narratives (all while laughing at it 'cause I could hear that voice in my mind).

All jokes aside, this got me thinking of works of art that engage with the question of what makes us human and what happens to human connection when we become over reliant on technology.

If we order technology around, does that impact how we communicate with other people?

And I thought of how some AI generated messages (e.g. via Manychat) make me cringe and wondered how might this impact the reader at the other end of our messages.

Recent recent experiments have shown it does; then again, this tech hasn't been normalized, so the verdict is still out.

But as entrepreneurs who are seeing the landscape change, I think it’s important to bear in mind the importance of keeping the human element in our work.

For me, it’s in the way(s) we maintain the human element in our brands' and business' communication.

And to me that starts before putting words on the “page”.

There has to be a connection to the idea, the feeling, the message you’re committing to “paper”.

There has to be a connection to the person on the other end. I don’t mean in the marketing sense (though that's also necessary as entrepreneurs).

I mean simply as a human at the other end of our message.

Keeping in mind that you could be part of the reason why they feel a little more hopeful and think “I can make this💩happen”.

Remembering that while AI can support our efforts, it is our job to maintain that human connection, including to our connection to our own humanity.

As I was rewatching a masterclasses from Steph Tuss, I started to think of all I've learned about persuasive writing over the years. And,Reader, I came to the conclusion that all sales come to these three questions: What do you want? What's in the way of you attaining that? What needs to change for you to attain it? All other questions are either follow-ups to clarify or to expand on these questions. Unsurprisingly, these are the same questions we would ask ourselves if we wanted to make a...

Reader If you caught last week's email, you know understanding our clients' pain can help us offer better support. But after identifying the pain and providing a solution, what happens? This is where pleasure points come in. And I cannot talk about pleasure without mentioning Audre Lorde's seminal essay "The Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power" (listen to her reading). Among many points, she discusses the erotic beyond sex as the power to feel joy deeply. Which brings me to copywriting...
